Banja Luka is located on the banks of the Vrbas River, where the river loses its characteristics of mountain rivers and enters the plain on its way to the confluence of the Sava. Much of the Banja Luka area belongs to the Vrbas, a small part of the West Basin Gomjenice. Vrbas flows in mid-town and inner-city area receives tributaries Suturliju, Crkvena and Vrbanja.

The central part of town lies at an altitude of 163 mi surrounded by Tertiary hills. According to various geomorphological, geological and hydro-graphic features that are important for the location of existing and future units of the city, the area of Banja Luka can be divided into four parts: a flat bottom valleys, alluvial terraces, hills that surround the basin and the Dinaric Alps in the south. In the southwest area rises Mount Manjaca, and in the southeast mountains Čemernica.

The town, following the flow of the Vrbas, developed downstream, and residential areas that were built after the Second World War and the earthquake 1969th they have developed in the width of the hills surrounding the Banja Luka.
